Someone said that I should use my platform to make a statement on body image. It brought up the perfect time to share a personal story that I have debated posting for a while.... so here it is for you guys:

I used to find myself looking back to being 18 as when I was in the best shape of my life. I was tan and skinny and could wear anything I wanted. I was used to walking into a room and feeling like everyone was noticing me. And it was easy to take a good picture. I spent most of my free time getting ready and admiring myself in mirrors. Embarrassing but true.
.
After I had my son, I suddenly lost that. I gained 30 lbs while pregnant and before I knew it, I was NOT pregnant and STILL 30 lbs up. My face broke out from hormones and I didn’t have time to worry about getting ready and taking selfies all day. It was a really hard thing to accept- When your identity is based off looking good & getting noticed, and that goes away, you start to freak out trying to get it back.

It has taken me a long time to accept the reality. The truth is that I never really had a “perfect” body. The truth is that I’m going to turn 40, 60, shoot, 90 and I’m not going to be the “hottest” person in the room. And I’m going to have to find other things to love and identify with.
.
And get this- the truth is, that 18 year old girl DID NOT KNOW how to take care of her body. I lived off Mountain Dew, I hated exercise, and my favorite meal was ice cream and Swiss rolls. I would stay up until 3 in the morning and go to school or work on just a few hours of sleep. Like that GIRL that I idealized for so long was actually lonely, unhealthy, and not to mention only tan from laying in a tanning bed every day. .
So maybe senior portraits ARE of that perfect girl. Or maybe you’re not tiny. But that’s not what I want you to see when you look back on your pictures. I want you to see that maybe that girl was a size 0, but she was still learning to love her body. I want you to see that even though you may have been in this crazy transitional period of your life, you were always this kind, generous, whatever person you are deep down. That’s what matters and that’s why I’m here doing this.

I’ve watched this guy here ^^^ (my fiancée Craig) wake up at 6:00 am so he could go to the gym before work. I’ve seen him come home and do all the dishes even though it’s 9pm and he just worked all day. And he spends his days off taking care of our son so that I can be with my clients. .
That to me is the definition of showing up. Adulting. Realizing that you still have to do all the things you don’t feel like doing. I think it’s hard especially when we’re waking up to snow and freezing temps in April. But once you do it, it’s not so bad. Let’s all try to be more like Craig this week.

It has occurred to me that almost every senior this year was blonde... so FINALLY here is a brunette for your feed. This picture makes me feel alive, this dress is so freaking beautiful (someone please send one to me 😭😭😭), and @kayleighgilbert you are so much fun & a natural in front of the camera.

What are your favorite creative outlets? For me it’s: photography, editing, having great conversations, decorating, styling my outfit for the day, working out to some good trap music, shopping for said decorating and outfits. I love beautiful design and creation. What makes you feel alive & pumping?

I appreciate this lesson. I appreciate where I’m at. I can celebrate others that are having their moment and know that I will have mine.
